It's Yoga Monday! Emma had fun at her class today, though there was the I-Need-To-Own-The-Chimes meltdown at first. I took a bunch of photos at snack time - which we do after the class. Every time I shot a photo she managed to quickly turn the back of her head to me. This photo is the best one, plus it curiously has 3 orbs of light, one for each child in the photo! Pretty special. The largest one almost looks like a mandala.

Emma has figured out she can open the bedroom door. And she of course remembers where the binkies are kept by my bedside. She keeps going in and grabbing one, sucking on it for a while and then letting me take it. I now have 3 binkies in my pocket.

More interestingly she is picking up words at a remarkable rate. I no longer think that babble is just babble. She picks up words from almost every conversation I have with her. Some come out pretty clear, some are strange. She definitely was trying to say YOGURT this afternoon but it came out DABU. So if dabu is yogurt than she probably just told me what my grocery shopping list should be...but the only word I got was dabu...

First Puppy Walk for my two-legged puppy

Today isn't following our new patterns with Terry taking Emma for the day and me taking the teams out to run. Terry is up at the farm dealing with cows and pigs and I am all alone with Emma (which is somewhat typical - having no local family to visit). I decided to bundle her up and finish my dog chores and then I decided while she was in her backpack that we were both dressed more then adequately for the warming weather and we headed up to the farm. Great exercise for me to carry the pack, ugh!!! Things were going along at the farm, lots of people, lots of dead pigs so far (sorry to all you sensitive folk). Emma got out of her pack and enjoyed visiting with Katie Esty and everyone who could take a break to say hello.

We headed home. Pretty tough to get Emma out of the driveway bcs she saw a big white truck and was bellowing for Khloe. It was the wrong truck so I convinced her that Khloe was not there and was maybe at her home (across the street from the farm) and we finally got moving again. THEN she would not leave Alisha's (Katie and Khloe's mother) driveway. No one was home though. But Emma did not understand that, she was pounding on the front door and all but crying (Kuwoweeeee Kuwoweeeeeee!).

Finally we got moving again and I decided to take the long way home through the woods on my old back-trail/puppy walk trail. We had to hike over a big pile of wood chips left by the power company's brush and tree work (why did we let them dump this right at the trail???). Piles like that stay warm and are squishy so that was a challenge for both Emma and myself. Then it was smooth sailing on the crunchy snow covered leaves. Emma walked a long ways! We examined pine cones and water and all sorts of animal tracks. It was fun to enjoy Emma in a context that is usually reserved for puppies as young as 5 or 6 weeks! Finally Emma got tooooooo tired to walk, actually yawning and sleepy. I made it home in time to change her diaper and have her fall asleep on the changing table!!! No way I could get her to sit in her high chair for lunch. Poor girl is going to wake up with an empty tummy. But we had such a lovely time. We will have to enjoy that special trail again sometime soon. Maybe next time I will bring Angus and let him run free back there. I'll bring the pack too, because it is really a long way for a little girl who is only 19 months. I wish I took the camera with me to get some photos, she was very cute in all her bundles and my big mittens half way up her arms.

Emma has started toddler yoga class, which she calls "yoyo". She seems to really enjoy it, even though she does have to share the bells which she covets madly.

Emma spoke her first English sentence yesterday! She seems to speak her own language fluently, though we do not understand it. However, she is learning English quiet well and her first sentence was "mamma hot!". Makes sense, she stepped out the front door into the blast of our heat wave and had her own comment on the weather.

Corina, Ali and I took Emma to the kids parkin North Conway after she helped us eat burritos. She ate exactly 3 beans...don't ask me how I know that.

We also visited a great toy store. I was busy putting things back on the shelf after she either knocked them off of threw them into her shopping cart. She really liked the shopping cart. Too bad it was 50$! Anyway, to Corina's horror the pile of pink purses were worthy of the cart and Emma got pretty mad when I tried to return them!

Today, if you could ask her, she would tell you she LOVES bananas. But this being her first experience with food, and my first experience feeding a baby...well things were not so peachy!

Just a little blurb from a sleep deprived mother... I think the diapers are keeping Emma up! I just called Green Mountain Diapers to ask about sizes, not wanting to make another purchasing mistake and burst into tears. What a nice woman, she talked me through measuring my mistake diapers, discussed baby body shape and diaper fit and encouraged me to order less diapers so I'd wash more often (better for diapers).

With Love, lessons from dogs that apply to babies and life

I had long ago discovered that if I did things with love that the results were always better. Everything is less stressful if love is applied, love comes with patience and a forgiving eye, but love also comes with the right ingredients for positive change.

Then I realized the only times I really failed at things were times when I could not apply love to the problem.

And recently I have learned that sometimes things are so hard that they just feel like failure, but as long as love is there, one comes out the other end of the challenge whole...and not broken. Crying along side your baby... unable to make her happy...unable to let her "cry it out".

I used to feel sad for the dogs I have that other people discarded. But now I am grateful, as these dogs have been the challenging ones. And I have gotten through the challenges by letting my heart grow. And I know these dogs are happy, since they are loved.

Examples of "With Love"

**....how else can filling dog bowls be fun for a baby? Emma will probably know all the dogs names soon, as I sing each dog's name and a little compliment to them as I lay out the bowls, add the food and whatever else.

**Saying good night to each dog as Emma and I tuck in the kennel at night...

**Figuring out that Java Bean can get along with male play mates as long as he enters the play area last...no stress for him if dogs do not dash out their doors into his "space".
**Figuring out after two nights of no sleep that Emma's diaper was keeping her up...not sure how I was able to have analytical thought after that much lack of sleep.

Rolling rolling rolling!!!

Emma can now roll and roll and roll... no big deal! She likes to do this and reach all the toys she wants.

But she also likes to sit up (and play for any length of time) then DIVE forward and entertain the thought of crawling...until her legs slide back and she is stuck belly down again. And rolls rolls rolls!

She can also stand up against something, like a couch or your shoulder. This really tickles her.

The jumper is still fun, the high chair is groovy, the swing seat is nice especially if she is feeling quiet or ok with being licked by her dogs. Bouncy seats and the bumbo are ok for a few minutes at a time. She hates her car seat, as she always has.

New fun today was using the hiking backpack with the rain canopy. She ended up with a very red face on one side, I hope it was not a reaction to the fabric of the backpack. It was cold and raw, maybe it was just that.

If anyone is curious about what Emma-Lizzie has eaten so far here is the list: bananas, apple sauce, pear sauce, blueberries (in the applesauce), sweet potatoes, rice farina (she hated this and so I ate it all, I thought it was yummy and made it for breakfast for a few days). I made the pears sauce, my neighbor made her the applesauce. The bananas were stolen from Dada's bunch. The rest were Earth's Best organic. But at 77-99 cents a jar, we aren't too into commercial baby food!!!

First Library Visit for Emma! Gordon-Nash Library we love you!

Emma visited her first friendly library*. We got two books for easy reading, one book for many cozy nights of reading and two books for Daddy.

*We tried the Plymouth library first but the policies and librarian were not friendly. We found instead the FABULOUS Gordon-Nash library. It has the extra bonus of a nice lawn out front to enjoy the new books in. The librarians were friendly and very helpful.

A Foot in the Mouth is on the right in photo. The poems are really fun to read and the illustrations are eye catching. I am seriously considering buying this book, even though it has no sled dogs in it.
Alex and Lulu is on the left. The story is subtle, sweet and perfect. The illustrations are pretty adorable. This book has a nice message and is well written. I loved it, I think this one is going on our wish list too.

Emma's first Hike

Emma, Aunt Lidia and I went for a short hike today. It was Emma's first time on terrain too bumpy and steep for the baby jogger. She napped through most of it in the baby carrier but did enjoy some of it. Lidia stuck Emma's toes into the shore of the brook, which was probably the highlight for Emma. We managed to not loose any binkies on the trail. I wish we had pictures but the batteries went dead.

Haze of Love

The chief difference between loving Emma and loving all my puppies is that when Terry comes home and I squish Emma's face up next to mine and ask Terry "do we look alike" he smiles and says yes. When I do this with a new puppy he looks mildly annoyed and says yes.

Another big difference is that no matter how much I kiss Emma, I do not get fur up my nose.

Other than that, it is the same wild plummet into love, the belly full of warm oatmeal feeling, the simple and exquisite joy. You might say "poor Emma has to share her mothers love with so many doggies..." but Emma says that she has a mommy who really has love down "pat".

MommYoga

I got my new MommYoga dvd last week and have been trying it out with Emma. So far we have made it through nearly 80% of the "class" a few times. Emma does get tired and usually demands to go nap about half to three quarters of the way through.

So the routine is: ask the majority of the house dogs to stay outside, not including Blanche of course. Lay out my yoga mat. Make a cushy baby yoga mat with baby blankets. Begin class.

Some of the poses you hold your baby, and some the baby goes on the floor. The first class Boomer stole the baby yoga mat...as in he curled himself up on the postage stamp sized baby landing zone. The second and third attempt at class only Blanche stuck around. I found that she would curl up on the back of my mat, but when Emma was on her mat Blanche would stand near her and gently sniff and nudge her. Then, next thing you know...Blanche is doing a energetic "downward dog" with Emma and me!

I swear, Blanche has a case of the Benjamin Buttons.

Well, I am waiting Emma to wake up. Every few minutes or so I hear her thrash around. But then it is back to wee little snores. She is wearing her monkey pajamas, which are about as cute as anything.

Emma is growing and so am I. What a big learning curve. It's a good thing babies start out pretty simple. Even the simple needs, like eating, were tough to learn. But now she needs new things, like she wants to be outside every day, she wants to interact with people, and wants to look at things. Soon she will want to be using her hands, but not quite yet. So what I am having to learn this week is that she wants to spend time doing those things plus she still needs to nap, maybe more than before, and I have to help her transition between all the parts of her day. At the same time, she seems to be becoming more sensitive to noise, and we have a lot of that here. The dogs are of course a huge source of noise with the kennel right outside the bedroom window. Not so bad at night when they sleep, but Emma has naps all throughout the day and the dogs are often playing or alerting to things going on around them. Wee little Tartlet has got the corner on the market for astounding and random sounds.

THANK YOU BEN AND CHIARA for my new jogger-stroller!

This is my super new rig. I am finally old enough for it and Mommy made me a supporting blanket deal. I loved being able to sit up a bit, with my head stabilized. Mommy went a little nutz in the warmth department, but it was fun. We went for a longer walk and had a great morning.
